Games, toys, puzzles and books are going to children in the North West Leicestershire area in time for the big day tomorrow. The annual appeal is organised by the North West Leicestershire Council for Voluntary Service, which is based at Coalville's Marlene Reid and has been running since 1973. Referrals from outside agencies, such as health visitors and social workers, ensure that the toys are given to families that are most in need. Organisers of the appeal said the response this year had been overwhelming, with businesses, schools and other community groups donating toys to the appeal. Members of the Honda Biker's Club, who have supported the Toy Appeal for many years, delivered the donated presents to the centre. Jane Ebinger, who works at the centre, said: "People have been very generous and the appeal will now make a big difference to a lot of children this Christmas. The donations this year have been as good as any and we are very grateful. We have already started dishing out the presents to the children's parents to give to their sons and daughters on Christmas Day." The 2005 Leicester Toy Run was again a great success - the following article appeared in the Leicester Mercury – Friday Dec 9 2005 Leicestershire Christmas Toy Run 2005 BIKERS SPREAD FESTIVE CHEER BY TOM BENNETT 10:30 - 09 December 2005 Dozens of Santas swapped their sleighs for Harleys to bring smiles to the faces of poorly youngsters. More than 150 bikers, many dressed as Santa, took to the road to deliver presents to children at Leicester Royal Infirmary. The ride began at Mallory Park, in Kirkby Mallory, near Hinckley, and participants travelled in convoy to Aylestone Leisure Centre, in Leicester, where they dropped off the gifts. Marshals held up traffic at junctions to enable the convoy to pass straight through. The ride, on Sunday, was the third Christmas toy run organised by the British Motorcyclist Federation (BMF) and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. Roger Ellis, area organiser for the BMF, said more bikers had taken part than expected. He said: "We've had a fantastic turnout. It's even better than last year. There's no better cause than giving to children unfortunate enough to be in hospital over Christmas. Hopefully, we didn't cause too many hold-ups to other traffic." One vehicle that stood out on the day was an Argos lorry. It joined the ride because HGV drivers at the company's Magna Park base, in Lutterworth, bought £1,000 worth of gifts for the youngsters, and there were too many to take on motorbikes. One of the HGV drivers, Brian Annall, who took part in the ride, said: "When we heard about what the toys were for, we decided to get involved. "We had a quick whip-round and it didn't take long to raise the money. The drivers have been really generous." Biker Ski dressed as a giant reindeer for the occasion. He said: "It's a really hot costume, but it gets a laugh. Even though we were holding people up, a lot got out of their cars and cheered and waved." Ruth Ward organised the ride on behalf of the trust. She said: "It's fantastic that all these bikers give up their time for this on a miserable Sunday, and we're really grateful." 2005 ARM The 2005 ARM was held at Houghton-on-the-Hill Leicestershire at the end of June. Leicestershire Christmas Toy Run 2004 A convoy of over 150 riders rode out of Mallory Park on a cold, damp Sunday morning on a mission to deliver toys to sick children in the Leicester Royal Infirmary. The riders had collected over 100 toys for this Annual Toy Run. The event was jointly organised by the British Motorcyclists Federation, The Leicester Hospitals NHS Trust and Leicester City Council and supported by Leicestershire Constabulary, who provided the police escort. The route followed the A47 into Leicester, then a ride through the city centre to finish up at Aylestone Leisure Centre, where the toys were collected. The riders were greeted by the chairman of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, Philip Hammersley, the Children's Ward Manager Tina Clegg and the Lord Mayor of Leicester Cllr. Piara Singh Clair, who all thanked the riders for their splendid effort. Apart from the toys an informal raffle and donations raised £300. Local BMF Rep. Roger Ellis added that we were all happy to make Christmas happier for children unfortunate enough to have to spend it in hospital. Roger also thanked all the marshals and supporters for their help. |
